Midwest Partners in Amphibian and Reptile Conservation

Midwest PARC Species

This list consists of 164 species of amphibians and reptiles native to the Midwest PARC region. Three subspecies are included due to state or federal status.

Federal listing includes:

Definitions for State Endangered, Threatened, and Special Concern status vary among states. Websites for each state should be referenced for specific definitions and list revisions. Species of Greatest Conservation Need are identified by each state in their State Wildlife Action Plan.

Although not recognized as a unique species, unisexual Ambystomatids were included in the list due to their presence in the MW Region and their listed status in some states.

Scientific and common names follow Crother et al. 2008, except where noted. Several taxonomic changes are included in this list, many are based on recent findings through DNA analysis. Refer to Crother et al. 2008 for references to these changes. Examples include new genus names for toads (from Bufo to Anaxyrus) and true frogs (from Rana to Lithobates).

State conservation status codes are determined by individual states. Regional concern, responsibility, and rank are determined by Midwest PARC for the entire Midwest PARC region. Read more about the regional concern, responsibility, and rank codes devised by Midwest PARC.
